ASEAN Urges Myanmar’s Military Council to Halt Violence and Engage in Dialogue

On January 19, ASEAN member states strongly urged Myanmar’s military council to cease hostilities and prioritize peace talks instead of focusing on upcoming elections. Reuters reported that the bloc emphasized the importance of facilitating humanitarian aid to affected regions, according to Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamed Hassan.

Speaking at a press conference after the ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting held on Malaysia’s Langkawi Island, Mohamed Hassan stressed the need for an immediate end to violence. He highlighted the ASEAN ministers’ condemnation of attacks on civilians and vital infrastructure in Myanmar.

The ministers called on all parties in Myanmar to exercise restraint, cease violence, and safeguard civilians from harm.

Malaysia Prepares for ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025

As Malaysia prepares to assume ASEAN’s rotating chairmanship in 2025, it announced the appointment of former Malaysian foreign minister Othman Hashim as the ASEAN Chairman’s Special Representative for Myanmar. Mohamed Hassan stated that Othman Hashim would soon visit Myanmar to facilitate discussions with all stakeholders.

Special Representative Othman affirmed his commitment to engaging with all parties involved to implement the “Five ASEAN Common Understandings.” These agreements were formulated in response to the military coup but have yet to be effectively enforced.

ASEAN’s Call to Action

This latest development reflects ASEAN’s collective effort to address the escalating crisis in Myanmar. By urging the military council to prioritize peace and humanitarian aid, ASEAN aims to foster stability and protect civilians amid ongoing violence.
