Myanmar Military Arrests Youths Attempting to Cross Into Thailand to Evade Conscription

The Myanmar military has intercepted and arrested several young men attempting to cross the border into Thailand to evade mandatory military service. According to a local source speaking to Hpa-an News, the arrests occurred in Hpa-an Township, where authorities have intensified their efforts to apprehend male youths aged 18 to 35.

This December, the military has ramped up inspections in the region, particularly at Thanlwin Bridge in Hpa-an Township. A new checkpoint has also been established in the Htilong area along the Hpa-an-Hlaing Bwe Road, specifically targeting those attempting to cross the border illegally.

Reports indicate that around 100 young men from Hpa-an were arrested and transported to military training schools. This move underscores the ongoing effort by the military to enforce recruitment laws amidst widespread resistance to conscription.

The increased military presence and strict border checks have sparked concern among local communities, particularly among male youths within the targeted age group. Many fear being forcibly recruited and sent to training camps as the military continues to tighten its grip on the region.
