January 11, 2025 – A joint offensive by the Arakan Army (AA) and the local People’s Defense Force (PDF) has reached Shwe Thaung Yan town, creating significant disruptions in the region. Reports indicate that the Pathein-Chaung Tha road, a key route leading to Chaung Tha beach, will be closed starting January 13 due to the escalating conflict.
Shwe Thaung Yan beach and Chaung Tha beach are located just 20 minutes apart by motorbike, making the situation in the area particularly precarious for residents and travelers. According to an anonymous Pathein resident, tensions are high as civilians in Chaung Tha attempt to flee.
“The AA and PDF forces have taken control of the general office and hospital in Shwe Thaung Yan. Chaung Tha residents are also preparing to leave, as the towns are very close. Reports suggest that the Pathein-Chaung Tha road will close, with military reinforcements and weapons expected to be deployed, signaling a worsening situation,” the resident explained.
The developments follow the recent capture of Gwe town by AA forces and the takeover of military council camps in Myitkyina village, located on the Ayeyarwady-Rakhine border. This marks a significant advancement for the AA and PDF in Ayeyarwady Division.
