Heavy Fighting Erupts as AA Targets Military Base on Taung Kot-Padaung Road
The Arakan Army (AA) has launched a significant attack on the Taung Pong Gyi camp located on the Taung Kot-Padaung road near Ushi Pin in Pyay Township, Bago Division. The assault, which began on January 1, has resulted in intense clashes between AA forces and the military council, according to military and local sources.
Reports indicate that the fighting has led to heavy casualties and destruction, with nearby villages, including Tha Pyay, Sup Kae, and Mikro, experiencing airstrikes from the military council. Civilians have been gravely affected, with numerous injuries and fatalities reported. Residents of villages close to Ushi Pin have been ordered to dig bunkers for protection amidst escalating violence.
Sources reveal that members of the military council stationed at Ushi Pin fled to Pathein and Pyay in late December, fearing an impending AA offensive. The current conflict is particularly fierce as the AA aims to capture the Taung Pong Gyi military base, a crucial stronghold along the strategic Taung Kot-Padaung road that links Pyay to Taung Kot.
This latest offensive is part of a broader effort by the AA to challenge military control in the region. On December 29, the AA declared its readiness to address internal issues through political dialogue, but the recent developments indicate that armed confrontations remain a critical component of their strategy.
The ongoing clashes underscore the volatility of the region and the increasing pressure on military council forces. With the AA’s determination to seize control and the military council’s reliance on airstrikes, the situation continues to pose significant risks for both combatants and civilians in the area.
