A mine attack targeting the Myanmar Economic Corporation No. 3 Steel Plant in Insein Township injured two SKS troopers on December 31, according to the Yangon Army (YA).
The attack occurred at approximately midnight in Ywama Ward, where the YA deployed three mines against the steel plant’s security team. According to an official from the YA, the attack coincided with New Year’s celebrations, amplifying the impact of the explosions.
“It was like a New Year’s party; the explosion was loud and powerful. The troopers were unaware of the situation as they were intoxicated. Two SKS troopers were immediately hit when the attack began,” the YA official stated.
The strike targeted four SKS troopers on-site, two of whom fled after the detonation of three mines attached to a hand grenade. Urban Guerrilla Force representatives corroborated this, describing the tactical approach.
Locals confirmed hearing a loud explosion near the No. 3 Steel Plant and noted tightened security measures in the aftermath. “There wasn’t much public traffic around the plant after the attack. Security was solely focused on the FSA members stationed there,” a resident remarked.
The Yangon Army has reaffirmed its intent to continue targeting FSA-related facilities and personnel. Over December 2024, urban guerrilla forces launched at least five attacks on FSA buildings and posts in Yangon, despite heightened security in the region. Notably, on December 22, an urban guerrilla attack at the Apollo Hotel in Mayangone Township injured FSA Major Zeyar Min during a wedding.
