In a significant blow to the military council, the Karen National Union (KNU) and joint People’s Defense Forces (PDF) successfully captured two military camps in Nyaung Lay Pin district, part of the military council’s operational zone (3). The operations occurred in early January, marking a decisive start to the year for the revolutionary forces.
The first camp, located on a hill in the Mu The area of Kyauk Gyi Township, fell into KNU hands on January 2, while the second camp was overtaken on January 3. The battles resulted in heavy casualties among the military council troops, and the revolutionary forces seized a cache of weapons and ammunition, according to local sources.
Although the KNU has yet to issue an official statement, Padoh Saw Tawnee, a spokesperson for the Karen National Union, emphasized that the group plans to escalate its military activities in 2024. This decisive action comes amidst ongoing tensions in the region as the KNU continues its fight for self-determination and federal democracy.
Meanwhile, in the KNU Brigade 6 area of Mon State, the Thanbyuzayat-Pagoda Three Road region has been under siege by joint KNLA/PDF forces for an extended period. Attempts by the military council to reinforce their troops have been thwarted, with significant resistance reported since late December 2023.
The KNU and allied forces remain committed to resisting the military regime, asserting control over key strategic locations, and strengthening their position in the fight for Myanmar’s freedom. These victories not only bolster morale but also symbolize the growing capability of the revolutionary forces in challenging the military council’s dominance.
