The MDF (Myanmar Defense Force) emerged as a significant resistance movement, built and organized by young people across Myanmar in response to the 2021 seizure of power. Within a few months of formation, these youths underwent intense training and strategically returned to their respective areas to continue their mission.
Under the leadership of Yeto, a group moved back to Yangon, where they played a pivotal role in organizing training sessions and collaborating on military strategies. These efforts expanded to regions like Kani, Minking, and Yinmar, laying the groundwork for further resistance coordination. From these initiatives, battalions were established in key townships such as Tanse, Dipa Yin, Ye U, Shwe Bo, Kantbalu, and Butalin under the instructions of MDF’s patrons.

The MDF’s approach included fostering alliances with other local resistance groups. Some teams were mobilized as MOD battalions, while others provided support as PAKAF units. Remaining aligned with local commands, these groups continued their efforts to defend their regions effectively.
Key leaders like Kyaw contributed significantly to the MDF’s growth. He transitioned from SSD Division 1 to SSI Division 2, leading operations across Bago and Yangon and currently focusing on preparations to extend efforts toward the Irrawaddy region. This strategic shift emphasizes the MDF’s commitment to expanding their influence and ensuring a unified resistance front.
Captain Saw James of the 3803 Battalion in Tharayawati District captured the spirit of the movement, stating: “A move for the roads back home—so that we can return home together, let’s take turns helping ten thousand people.”
The MDF’s dedication to its cause, combined with the determination of its leaders and fighters, reflects a deeply rooted effort to secure freedom and justice for Myanmar. By taking action rather than relying on words, they continue to inspire trust and unity among their supporters.
