Obo Prison Collapse: 12 Dead, 10 Injured After Myanmar Earthquake

Political Prisoners Among Casualties in Devastating Quake
On April 1, 2025, the All Myanmar Political Prisoners’ Network (PPNM) reported that Mandalay’s Obo Prison sustained severe damage from the 7.7 magnitude earthquake, resulting in at least 12 deaths and 10 injuries. The earthquake, which struck Sagaing and Mandalay, caused the collapse of prison dormitories, leading to casualties among both prisoners and staff.

Death Toll May Be Higher, Says PPNM
According to PPNM founder Ko Thaik Htun Oo, the official numbers may not reflect the actual death toll inside Obo Prison. He accused the military council of concealing the real figures, stating:
“The numbers we have confirmed are just the minimum. The actual death and injury toll could be much higher.”
PPNM has officially verified the deaths of one man and two women but is still confirming the identity of nine others.
Government’s Response & Lack of Transparency
Despite confirming 2,056 deaths and 3,900 injuries nationwide from the March 28 earthquake, the military council has not released an official statement on Obo Prison’s casualties. Attempts to contact military council spokesman Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun on April 1 for clarification were unsuccessful.
Urgent Need for Accountability & Aid
With Obo Prison located at the earthquake’s epicenter, human rights groups are calling for transparency and urgent assistance for injured detainees. Rescue operations continue in affected areas as Myanmar struggles with the aftermath of one of its deadliest earthquakes in history.
